Strains and Sprains

So far we’ve learnt about first aid boxes and what to do for cuts and nose bleeds. Have you ever sprained or strained any part of your body for example your wrist or your ankle? What exactly are ? These are essentially injuries to the softer areas around bones and joints . They are quite different from fractures.

In the event of a strain or sprain, an acronym that may come in handy is RICE. What does RICE stand for? R stands for rest, rest the limb, don’t overwork it. I stands for Ice, put an ice pack on the area to reduce inflammation, C is for compression, you can use an elastic bandage to reduce swelling, don’t make it too tight. and lastly E is for elevation. Elevate the limb to reduce swelling from venous return.

We should note that the use of RICE has been under constant review and various elements may need to be modified depending on situation. take to a hospital if not better.

Join me tomorrow as we discuss First aid for burns.
