Relationship between Exercise and Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) is a chronic condition. Diabetes and high bp have no cure but can be managed.

The cornerstone of management of hypertension involves

  1. Lifestyle modification including stopping smoking and diet
  2. Being active and doing physical exercises
  3. Medications

Some wonder if they can just exercise to control their BP rather than face the inconvenience of popping drugs daily with attendant side effects.

Scientists haven’t conducted adequate studies to prove this beyond reasonable doubt. However, they conducted a comparative study which analysed data from various studies. This showed interesting results.

The study found that in the General population, taking antihypertensive drugs was more effective in lowering BP than exercise. However, when the study looked specifically at people with high BP they saw that exercise was as effective as most BP drugs.
