Almost all of us at some point in our lives would have exclaimed “Oh, I have a headache!” Or “my head hurts!” Or “I think I have a #migraine!”
It is such a common symptom that you find some people who say they have a headache almost everyday!
What exactly is a headache?
Simply put it is pain which we feel around the head region.
So is it normal to have a headache? And can a headache signify something sinister? We will answer these in due time.
Headache types
There are various types which include #tension headaches, cluster headaches and migraines. I will explain these.
For example, there are times we develop headaches after stressing ourselves or when we feel depressed, this is called a #tension headache, typically this may be felt as fullness or tightness in the head, it can be as short as 30 minutes or last up to a week.
The good thing is that it responds to simple analgesics like paracetamol.
What causes headache on one side of the head?
Let’s discuss cluster headaches.
#Cluster headache like the name implies is a cluster of headaches, it is severe and strictly one sided and can be felt around the temple region and the eyes, if you can imagine being stabbed or your eye being dragged, then you will have an idea of how it feels.
Sometimes you may notice water coming out of the nose or eye on that side.
Cluster headaches may occur suddenly with each episode lasting between 5 and 30 minutes.
Migraine Headaches
Migraines are a severe and complex type that have the characteristic of occurring over and over again; a unique thing about migraines is that they can give a warning that they are about to occur, these warnings are called #aura, this aura could take the form of seeing flashes of light or not being able to see parts of your surrounding as if there is a light covering it.
Have you ever had an aura? Can you describe it?
Over 70 % of people who have migraines are women. Also, if you have a family member with migraine, there is higher possibility of having it.
Migraine Triggers
There are certain things that are known to trigger attacks of migraine in some people, one of them is #stress another is inactivity, another is not having regular sleep.
