Diabetes and Sugar levels (Day 1)
Diabetes and Sugar intake
Welcome to health check with Dr Gabby. Today we begin a new topic – diabetes mellitus. What is the relationship between diabetes and #sugar?
Diabetes is one illness most of us have heard about which we attribute to taking sugar, but the truth is not everyone that has diabetes takes lots of sugar; some may get diabetes through heredity, others through drugs and illnesses etc.
Diabetes is a condition where one’s #blood sugar level is increased beyond normal.
This happens when a hormone called #insulin which functions to mop up the sugar in the body is either absent or not
sufficient.
Diabetes types
There are two major types of diabetes mellitus – Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 usually has an earlier onset in life and is usually hereditary ; you will be given insulin since your body can’t produce it.
Type 2 starts later in life and may not require insulin. It is usually easier to manage.
There are other types like gestational diabetes. This happens in pregnant women.
It may be limited to their pregnancy period and resolve after delivery.
Join me tomorrow as we talk about how you can check your blood sugar.
