DEALING WITH DEMENTIA.

Spread the love

Hello mom, it’s good to see you after all this time

I’ve been abroad trying to make some golden dime

I’m back to splurge you with so much money

Back from the land flowing with milk and honey.

Hello mom, you don’t seem too excited

It’s me, Michael, your son, playing for Manchester United

Can’t you see me as I wave to you, it’s been so long

Mom …mom! Is there something wrong?

Mom, why do you keep calling me Daniel

You named me yourself, my name is Michael

And why do you keep talking to daddy?

We both know he’s been dead 20 years already.

Mom, why do you keep misplacing everything?

I found your watch yesterday in the washing machine

And why did you pay the salesman 1000 dollars?

For an item that cost only 10 dollars.

Mom, I’m so sorry I neglected you

But I’d gladly give away all this wealth for your memory to be returned to you

For what’s the use if I’m so wealthy

And my dear mom can’t remember me.

  1. My grandmother is just starting to show signs. This weekend she couldn't find her car at Walmart. My brother in law took her to her car and asked her if this was hers. She said she didn't know. He had to tell it that it was. Dementia runs in my family, and I am not looking forward to it.

    Thanks for linking up!

  2. My grandmother suffered for over a decade. It was awful and took a big toll on our family.

Thank you for linking up and helping us spread the word about Medical Monday Bloghop!

    It is truly appreciated!

  3. So sorry about your loss Anna, and I'm impressed with your love and care for your husband. Indeed, age comes with its challenges. Dementia also teaches us not to be too busy to show love to those around us especially when they can appreciate it.

  4. Sad stuff this De E.

I have written of dementia extensively in poetry or prose for I know it very well.

It is a feature of (most of) those I care for in my workplace and also of my homelife – mum (RIP) and my lovely husband.

We are living longer – but this also brings with it the increase in those living long enough to develop dementia… although of course advancing age does not always bring with it dementia and dementia has other causes too.

    Anna :o]
