Sleep How to Sleep Better Now
Night Terrors and Sleep walking
We’ve been talking about sleep disorders which affect the quality, timing and amount of sleep. Another group we will talk about are called parasomnias. These are those disturbances which occur while a person sleeps, you find people that engage in one activity or the other while sleeping for example sleep walking, here the person may start walking around or even go out. It is very difficult to wake such a person.
Another is #night terrors, here the person wakes up screaming, sweating, shaking etc.
Some people may bed wet, grind their teeth or even start talking while asleep.
Have you experienced any of the above?
let’s talk about Some general measures you can take to improve your sleep quality. These include
- Cut out caffeine drinks In the evening e.g. coffee, tea, cola drinks. Drink a warm glass of milk instead.
- Stop smoking,
- Cut down your alcohol intake
- Have a bath before going to bed.
- Dim or put off your bedroom lights
- Do not use your mobile devices e.g. tablets and phones while in bed,
- Remove your TV from your bedroom. Let it be just for sleeping.
- Have a regular exercise schedule, this cannot be over stated. Exercise has many advantages apart from keeping you fit, it aids metabolism, helps your muscles to relax, reduces anxiety among others. However it may be better not to do it in the evenings.
- Also, if you can, reduce your naps during the day, this may diminish the quality of your night sleep. Have scheduled times for going to sleep and waking up.
- Learn relaxation techniques.
All these measures will go a long way in improving your sleep. Is there any one you are prepared to try?
Treating Sleep Disorders
Treatment of established cases of sleep disorder will depend on the underlying cause if one can be found, this is why you must give full details to your doctor about the origin and progress of your complaint.
If a medical or psychiatric condition can be found e.g. heart disease, depression, then that condition is treated. If it is a drug that is causing it, e.g. Blood pressure or psychiatric drug, the drug is stopped or changed if possible. Sometimes sleep medications may be used for a period of time.
