Myths regarding Hypertension
Welcome to Health Check with Dr Gabby.
Yesterday we discussed the complications of hypertension.
Today we will talk about some common #myths and beliefs about hypertension that are false.
One of such myths is that once you take medication for treating hypertension you will not need to continue with the medication.
This is completely untrue.
Unless a secondary cause can be found and treated, hypertension is usually a condition that cannot be
cured but must be managed throughout life.
Another myth is that children, teenagers and young adults cannot have hypertension.
This may have been true in the past, but these days, high blood pressure affects people of all ages —
including young children

Monitoring Blood Pressure
Let’s look at how to monitor your blood pressure.
It is advisable you get your own blood pressure machine especially if you are hypertensive so you can check your blood pressure at home.
You can record your blood pressure in a diary or notebook which you can show to your doctor when you go for appointments. This is a good way of letting the doctor have an idea of your normal BP ranges as a few people have a raised blood pressure just because they are in a hospital and are anxious.
You don’t need to check your BP everyday, you can check every other day or once or twice a week except your doctor says otherwise.
You can also go to a nearby pharmacy or clinic to have it checked.
Do you own a Blood Pressure monitor?
